MAWANI announces 12.07 per cent increase in container handling in 2023

The Saudi Ports Authority (MAWANI) has announced a 12.07 per cent increase in container handling across the ports under its management in 2023.

According to MAWANI, a total of 8.44 million TEU were handled, representing a significant increase from 7.53 million TEU handled in 2022.

The Kingdom’s entire ports saw a 9.01 per cent growth in yearly container handling in 2023, hitting 11.3 million TEU from 10.4 million TEU in 2022.

Furthermore, exported containers under MAWANI totalled 2.58 million TEU, a 15.56 per cent increase from 2.23 million TEU in 2022. Imported containers were 2.61 million TEU, a 12.68 per cent increase from 2.32 million TEU in 2022.

Transshipment containers also saw an 8.96 per cent rise in volume, with 3.23 million TEU transshipped in 2023 as opposed to 2.97 million TEU in 2022.

In terms of the Kingdom’s total ports, exported containers increased by 13.88 per cent, reaching 2.74 million TEU from 2.4 million TEU in 2022.

Imported containers increased by 10.51 per cent, to 2.73 million TEU, up from 2.47 million TEU in 2022.

Transshipment containers increased by 6.23 per cent, reaching 5.89 million TEU in 2023 from 5.55 million TEU in 2022.

Notably, MAWANI achieved its highest-ever monthly container handling statistics in May 2023, with an 18.80 per cent increase in the number of handled containers.

Additionally, Jeddah Islamic Port recorded its highest monthly handling statistics in October 2023, with a total of 511,348 TEU handled, while King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam also achieved a record number with 211,202 TEU handled in a single month in July 2023.

This month, MAWANI and MELDOG, the logistics arm of the MSC, invested a value exceeding 150 million riyals ($40 million) to the integrated Logistics Park at Dammam’s King Abdulaziz Port.
