Container volumes in Oakland take a hit

Port of Oakland's container volume declines in August

The Port of Oakland has reported a year-on-year container volume dip in August 2023.

According to the port, complete TEU handling fell 13.1 per cent in August 2023, to 135,253 TEU, from 155,682 TEU in August 2022.

Vessel calls have continued to increase into 2023, with 650 vessel contacts reported until the end of August, up 13 per cent from August 2022.

According to the authority, this indicates that port operations are running smoothly, boasting better on-time performance of ships, and less congestion at docks and at inland warehouses.

Port of Oakland Maritime Director, Bryan Brandes, said: “While August’s container volumes might not be where we want them to be, there are indicators that point to a bright future for the seaport.

“Improved port operations, coupled with our ongoing investment in greening the port, will provide on-going benefits to importers and exporters.”

Full imports dropped 17.5 per cent, with 72,481 TEU transiting port terminals, versus 87,844 TEU in August 2022.

Full exports shrunk by 7.5 per cent, with 62,733 TEU passing through port facilities, compared to 67,838 TEU in August 2022.

Retailers, manufacturers, and other shippers who use Oakland’s facilities have lowered their import quantities.

This is a continuation of a pattern that began in 2021. Shippers may have yet to identify the optimal amount of fresh shipments to match present demand, according to estimates.

Vessels are running on time and unloading and loading goods with little disturbance, which is good news for exporters.

Empty imports fell 11.1 per cent, to 13,329 TEU in August 2023, from 11,998 TEU in August 2022, while empty exports fell 29.6 per cent, to 30,579 TEU in August 2023, from 43,443 TEU in August 2022.

This month, the Port of Oakland hosted the Zero Emissions Truck Ride and Drive event.
