From guiding vessels through San Francisco Bay to lighting the waters of Sydney Harbour, solar-powered LED lighting has revolutionised marine operations around the world. With a bright, crisp light source visible from up to six nautical miles away, a self-contained solar LED lantern can replace an entire incandescent system and virtually eliminate ongoing maintenance requirements for up to five years. Deployed by coast guards, port authorities, marinas and navies around the world, solar LED (light emitting diode) technology has set the standard for a convenient, reliable and cost-effective alternative for illuminating aids-to-navigation systems.

The container transpor tation industr y has witnessed a remarkable growth over the last decade. More cranes are being purchased annually then ever before and crane sizes have increased dramatically. The myriad of crane types required in terms of form and function have always been evident. Thus, more efficient AC converter solutions were developed to cater the demand for ‘power hungry’ cranes yet with the availability of different power configurations, ease of maintenance and reliability in mind to meet the demands of the ever challenging container transportation industry.

Nuttall John Martin is currently working on a 330 metre length of the longest continuous quay wall in the UK at Trinity Deep Water Terminal, Berth 5. The remit is to strengthen the existing twin channel wailing beams in reinforced concrete. This, as a normal exercise would not be something out of the ordinary, but on this occasion the existing beams placed at – 0.8 AOD (just above mean low water springs) are only visible in the 4 metre tidal range for an average of two hours either side of low water. The existing quay is a suspended deck onto King Piles with fender blocks spaced along the quay. The works are part of the ongoing maintenance of the port facilities by the Port of Felixstowe.

Imagine for a minute that you are a citizen of New Orleans and that one morning you wake up to the pungent stench of fuel permeating throughout your city. Imagine that as you cross the Crescent City Connection Bridge to discover that the Mississippi River is covered, as far as the eye can see, with a thick, black layer of a substance with a rainbow sheen. Now, imagine the relief as you see a Coast Guard cutter navigating its way through the dark film.

Sakhalin Island Kaliningrad based crane manufacturers Baltkran are supplying a double girder container crane with a capacity of 35t to an intermodal terminal in Kholmsk on Sakhalin Island. The span of the crane is 25m; stacking height is 2+1. The allelectric telescopic slewing spreader with its own slewing device will allow an accurate positioning and stacking of 20, 30, 40 and 45ft containers without changing the spreader, resulting in significant cost savings and reducing time for loading/discharging trains and trucks.

The Xita Dock in the Port of Valencia is one of the most important shipping terminals in Spain. It has consistently ranked as Spain’s number one port for real registered foreign trade volumes (imports and exports) and channels traffic from all sectors of the economy and practically any type of commodity. One of the main imports is coal clinker, which is currently stored on a platform next to the Xita dock. The issue with this is that in high winds, coal clinker dust clouds are created, resulting in pollution and dust particle fallout within the dock and surrounding areas.
