MOL, Rio Tinto to develop decarbonisation of maritime transportation

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) and Rio Tinto, a dry bulk shipper, have signed a Partnership Agreement to enhance decarbonisation of maritime transportation.

MOL and Rio Tinto have decided to work on maritime decarbonisation, in addition to their commitment to the DOO initiative.

Rio Tinto’s DOO programme aims to improve safety and crew welfare in the dry bulk business.

MOL and Rio Tinto plan to focus on enhancing operational and technical efficiency, as well as exploring future collaboration in alternative shipping fuels by using one other’s experience.

In February, MOL announced that the LNG bunkering vessel Brassavola performed its first bunkering service for an LNG-fuelled bulk carrier at the Port of Singapore.

More recently, MOL and Metro Weather Co., Ltd. announced the launch of a wind condition measurement device trial on the Tokyo–Fukuoka line.
