MAN Cryo – MAN Energy Solutions’ marine LNG fuel-gas-system manufacturer – will supply the LNG fuel-gas supply systems for Wallenius SOL’s new fleet of ice-class Ro-Ro vessels.

In a statement, Man Energy Solutions said it will also supply two 9L28/32DF dual-fuel auxiliary engines to each vessel.

The vessels will run on entirely on LNG, which stands for liquefied natural gas, and will be the first environmentally efficient vessels in northern Europe.

Furthermore, they will be the largest vessels ever to meet Finnish/Swedish ice class 1A Super standard, ensuring year-round service in the frozen Gulf of Bothia.

The 242-meter vessels will have a sailing speed of 20 knots and a capacity of 5,800 lane meters. Delivery is scheduled for 2021 from the Yantai Raffles shipyard, China.

Among the vessels environmental benefits are a 50% fuel consumption per tonne-km, a 60% decrease in emissions of greenhouse gases, a 98% reduction in sulphur dioxide and an 85% cut in nitrogen oxides. There is also a 95% decrease in particulate emissions.

Wallenius Sol announced in May 2019 that the vessels would be built, Port Technology International reported on it at the time.

Louise Anderson, Head of MAN Cryo, said: “These RoRos will operate in a sensitive, sulphur-emission-control area in harsh winter conditions where a reliable LNG fuel-gas supply system is of the utmost importance.

“We are very pleased that both shipyard and shipowner trust us to deliver the fuel-gas supply system for such unique vessels.”
