ICTSI Contecon Manzanillo sets January record rail volume

Contecon Manzanillo S.A. de C.V. (CMSA), a subsidiary of International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI), has achieved a record in January by handling 20,400 TEU of rail cargo.

This represents a 68 per cent increase compared to the same month in 2023 and the highest rail throughput in Manzanillo.

José Antonio Contreras, CMSA’s CEO, said: “The increased use of rail to receive and dispatch cargo is key for us. We started a growth plan together with customers and FERROMEX in 2021, which allowed us to gradually increase service volumes and reliability.

“Last January, we were able to move 23 per cent of import cargo by rail and set a record for CMSA and the Port of Manzanillo.”

CMSA and CMA CGM began operating the first block train service from the Port of Manzanillo’s Second Specialised Container Terminal (TEC-II) to Valle de Mexico last year.

The service then included Monterrey to the cycle, connecting the port to the country’s two major consumer and manufacturing areas.

This year, CMSA will reportedly begin expanding its 2.2-kilometre rail tracks and purchasing new loading and unloading equipment to improve rail capacity by more than 100 per cent.

“In addition to the investment we are currently making in our container yards and docks, we are going to start the expansion of our railways in the coming months. Our goal is to double our rail volume by 2025 and take advantage of the resulting logistical and environment benefits,” added Contreras.

In November 2023, CMSA set a record handling 14,400 TEU during the recent call of the APL Vanda.
