The Callao Multipurpose North Terminal, operated by APM Terminals (APMT), has welcomed the MSC Chiyo, the largest capacity containership to ever call in Peru.
This year saw the launch of a new container ship managed by Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC).
The vessel is 366 metres long and 51 metres broad, and it runs on the ANDES Service, which connects Callao to the Asian continent.
Due to its maximum draught of 17 metres, the MSC Chiyo has a higher-than-average container capacity.
It was the highest capacity vessel to ever arrive on the west coast of Peru, with 16,616 TEU on board, compared to the 14,000 TEU boats that regularly operate on the same service.

During its stay at APMT Callao, 2,586 crane moves were made in total. This included 1,522 import TEU and 1,483 export TEU, which were handled with the terminals five super Post-Panamax ship-to-shore cranes for almost the entire operation.
An impressive crane productivity of 115 moves per hour was achieved.
Fernando Fauche, Commercial Director of APMT Callao, said: “At APM Terminals Callao we are proud to be the main port in the country and to be the first to receive ships of this capacity.
“One of the factors that make events like this a reality is the great care and priority we give to our internal safety and security standards, ensuring that they are 100 per cent met and providing guarantees to our clients.
“The arrival of this large vessel is undoubtedly a milestone for the terminal, and events like this reaffirm our mission to become an international hub for the different players in the logistics sector and thus continue to meet the needs of the local and global market.”
In June 2023, APMT Elizabeth received the first call of Wan Hai’s updated Far East – US East Coast AA7 service.
More recently, APMT invested $60 million in port-equipment electrification trials to accomplish the industry-changing breakthrough.
