The port of Rotterdam has a staggering throughput of approximately 470 million tonnes, it generates 385,000 jobs and it contributes 6.2% of Dutch gross domestic product. It is also one of the most ambitious ports in the world, developing an aspiring, forward-thinking, digital development plan in a determined effort to become the smart port of the future.
“Obviously, we are proud of the statistics but throughput numbers are no longer enough as a measure for a port’s success. We want to be the smartest port in the world and maintaining our strong competitive position in the future means we will also have to upgrade our infrastructure and our systems with new digital resources,” Allard Castelein, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, said in a recent interview.
