WNTI, NEMO to boost nuclear maritime safety
The World Nuclear Transport Institute (WNTI) and the Nuclear Energy Maritime Organization (NEMO) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support the safe and sustainable development of nuclear-powered ships and transportable nuclear power plants (TNPPs).

Under the MoU, WNTI will focus on the safe transport of nuclear materials and TNPPs, drawing on its experience in international logistics, while NEMO will lead on matters related to nuclear-powered vessels, including design, regulation, and operations.

Both organisations will collaborate on floating nuclear power plants, and will work with institutions such as the IAEA and International Maritime Organization (IMO) to shape international standards, regulations, and technical guidance.

The maritime sector currently accounts for around 2.9 per cent of global carbon emissions, according to the IMO.

Nuclear propulsion offers an emissions-free alternative to conventional fuels, while TNPPs can provide clean electricity and high-temperature heat to areas with limited grid access or energy security concerns.

These units could also support hydrogen production or seawater desalination, helping to alleviate water scarcity in drought-prone coastal regions.

The collaboration aligns with WNTI’s forthcoming five-year strategy, which prioritises delivery, partnership, and development of the nuclear transport sector.

NEMO is expanding its activities. It helps integrate mobile nuclear technologies safely into commercial and industrial energy systems.

Prof. Pete Bryant, CEO, WNTI, said: “We’re proud to partner with NEMO to drive the development of international standards for transportable nuclear power plants and wider applications of nuclear power in the maritime environment.

“This collaboration is a crucial step toward accelerating clean energy innovation – helping us tackle climate change and deliver on the UN Sustainable Development Goals.”

Dr. Mamdouh El-Shanawany, Chairman, NEMO, stated: “By bringing together our complementary expertise, we are laying the groundwork for a new era of clean maritime transport and reliable, dispatchable energy wherever it is needed most.

“We look forward to working closely with WNTI to develop robust international standards and unlock the full potential of nuclear innovation to benefit coastal communities, industries, and the environment alike.”

Recently, NEMO was granted NGO Consultative Status at IMO, marking a milestone in NEMO’s mission to support the safe, sustainable, and responsible adoption of nuclear energy in maritime applications.
