This is the moment tug boats saved the 366-meter-long Gustav Maersk Line containership from a rocky situation after it ran aground yesterday (January 10, 2017) while transiting the Strait of Messina in Southern Italy, near the town of Torre Cavallo.

The grounding occurred as Gustav Maersk set off from Rijeka, Croatia for Gioia Tauro, Italy. The Vessel’s condition was checked and no breaches were found by the Coast Guard, who refloated Gustav Maersk at 7:30 AM local time with the help of two tugs and brought to Gioia Tauro to be checked.

Maersk have since initiated an investigation. All crew is safe and accounted for and no pollution was reported. The findings so far do not indicate that any technical failure caused the incident.

Maersk had another accident recently when, en-route from Rotterdam to Bremerhaven, the box ship Munkebo Maersk lost 5 containers during a particularly heavy storm.

However, this incident brought a welcome surprise to the children living near the German coast.
