Smart Mooring software by Royal HaskoningDHV has been used to support operational decision making at Saqr Port, the largest bulk port in the Middle East region and one of the RAK Ports (UAE).
In early 2020 Royal HaskoningDHV and RAK Ports agreed to set up the innovative Smart Mooring system, focussing on the Deep-Water Bulk Terminal in Saqr ports.
Smart Mooring is a software application that makes vessel operations safer and more efficient by providing actionable insights for decision makers. The application actively warns the port control operator or ship captain for expected unsafe situations of a moored ship. The easy-to-use tool predicts vessel behaviour days in advance by combining hydrodynamic calculations and metocean forecast.
During the inclement weather season, the system was up and running to predict the impact of metocean conditions on moored vessel.
Captain Michael Magee, Group Harbour Master RAK Ports and user of the Smart Mooring software: “The system is proving very useful to us. For example, during a period of poor sea conditions in mid-March, we kept a Capesize vessel alongside, but decided not berth a Panamax vessel based on the Smart Mooring output.”
In other words, the software adds science to the decisions related to the ship-shore interaction. The actionable insights gained from the software support operational decisions in the port control centre, on the terminal or by the ship captain.
Smart Mooring plays a central role in the digital future of the ship-shore interface.
