Seaspan Energy has completed the first ship-to-ship (STS) liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering of a RoRo vessel at the Port of Long Beach.
On 12 June, the Seaspan Baker refuelled NYK Line’s Plumeria Leader, an LNG-powered pure car and truck carrier.
This marks the latest in a series of milestones for Seaspan Energy, which conducted its first LNG STS transfer at the port in December and bunkered its first tanker in May.
Harly Penner, President of Seaspan Energy, said: “We are extremely proud to achieve this significant milestone as the first company to complete an STS LNG bunkering of a pure car carrier in the Port of Long Beach.
“This accomplishment is a testament to the hard work and collaboration of our team, NYK, and the Port of Long Beach. And we look forward to expanding our service on the West Coast of North America.”

According to the Port of Long Beach’s Clean Marine Fuels White Paper (2025), LNG remains a leading low-emission marine fuel, producing significantly lower levels of sulfur oxides and particulate matter than conventional options.
Seaspan reports that LNG use reduces particulate, nitrogen oxide, and sulfur oxide emissions by more than 90 per cent, and cuts GHG emissions by up to 27 per cent.
