Orca AI has announced a major milestone as Seaspan Corporation deployed its SeaPod digital watchkeeper solution across its entire fleet.
As part of its broader digital strategy, Seaspan began using Orca AI’s SeaPod system on selected vessels to improve situational awareness during navigation. An analysis of fleet performance between 2023 and 2024 reported a 35 per cent increase in the average minimum distance between ships in open waters, along with a 37 per cent reduction in close encounters.

Orca AI’s technology enabled Seaspan’s crews to reduce extreme manoeuvres and avoid unnecessary course changes. These navigational efficiencies reportedly contributed to fuel savings of $100,000 per vessel per year and avoided the release of 500 metric tonnes of CO2 per ship.
Powered by advanced computer vision, Orca AI’s SeaPod integrates data from Radar, AIS, and GPS to monitor the surrounding maritime environment in real-time. It identifies and alerts crew to high-risk targets, day or night, in all weather conditions—enabling early action and safer operations.
Seaspan has also adopted Orca AI’s FleetView dashboard, which provides shoreside teams with live performance insights.

“Seaspan is committed to driving operational excellence, improving emissions data and reporting, and enhancing navigation safety,” said Torsten Pedersen, Chief Operating Officer of Seaspan Corporation.
“Our continued partnership with Orca AI aligns with our vision for digital transformation. We are proud to extend this collaboration across our fleet, leveraging AI to deliver enhanced performance, sustainability, and safety.”
Yarden Gross, CEO and Co-Founder of Orca AI, added: “Seaspan’s adoption of Orca AI is a testament to the transformative potential of AI in maritime operations. It shows that technology not only enhances safety but also delivers measurable benefits like reduced fuel consumption and improved efficiency.”
Orca AI recently released thermal imaging footage capturing the collision between the cargo ship Solong and stationary oil tanker Stena Immaculate in the North Sea. The video shows flames erupting post-impact, as the collision resulted in a tragic fatality, with one crew member of the Solong reported missing and presumed dead after search operations by HM Coastguard were concluded.
