Qatargas-chartered LNG vessels have carried out the supposed ‘first’ ship-to-ship (STS) transfer of LNG.
The operation was carried out between two Q-Flex type vessels following an incident involving one of the ships on the Singapore straits.
Whilst there was minor damage to the vessel, there were no reported injuries to personnel, nor was there any environmental impact.
Specialised equipment was used in order to safely transfer 211,000 m³ of LNG from one vessel to the other. The process took six days to complete.
In preparation for the operation, Qatargas carried out numerous safety tests and risk assessment procedures to ensure the safety of those on board and to prevent any risk to the local environment.
Qatargas was set up in 1984 and is now one of the largest LNG producers in the world, producing up to 42 million tonnes of LNG per annum.
