PSA Singapore (PSA) has announced a planned expansion of its Jurong Island Terminal (JIT) to satisfy increasing demand for sustainable, efficient, and resilient supply chain solutions.
JIT, located on Jurong Island’s northwestern seafront, reportedly offers twice-daily barge sailings that connect beneficial cargo owners (BCOs) on Jurong Island to PSA’s main hubs at Tuas, Pasir Panjang, and Brani, from which they can leverage Singapore’s connectivity for unparalleled access to global markets.
Jurong Island is the hub of Singapore’s energy and chemical industries. Managed by JTC, it spans 3,000 hectares and hosts more than 100 global companies carrying out refining, olefins production and chemical manufacturing operations.
While containerised raw materials and completed goods may be transported to and from Jurong Island by truck, barging is less labour demanding, does not contribute to road congestion, and emits approximately 30 per cent less CO2.
Demand for barging has consistently increased in recent years, with JIT volumes reportedly rising 13 per cent year-on-year (YoY) in 2023 to a record 149,000 TEU.

PSA, in collaboration with JTC, will extend JIT to raise its yearly handling capacity to 300,000 TEU to meet forecast demand.
PSA will also create new Dangerous Goods (DG) handling and cargo transloading facilities to supplement its portfolio of physical and digital solutions aimed at assisting BCOs in better managing their inventory and supply chains.
The JIT extension, which is expected to be finished by 2025, would also help Jurong Island convert into a sustainable Energy and Chemicals park in accordance with Singapore’s Green Plan 2030.
On 8 March, a commemoration ceremony was conducted at PSA Horizons, the company’s corporate office, in the presence of stakeholders and partners.

Nelson Quek, Regional CEO Southeast Asia, PSA International, said: “The port has always been a gateway and enabler for other pillars of Singapore’s economy, offering reliable, resilient and competitive access to global sources and markets.
“The collaboration between PSA and JTC to expand JIT ensures that current and future enterprises in Singapore’s Energy and Chemicals sector will continue to reap these benefits in the years ahead, and do so in more sustainable ways.”
Alvin Tan, ACEO, JTC, stated: “Barging volumes on Jurong Island are set to rise with increasing demand for sustainable logistics. JIT’s expansion is poised to meet this growth, and collaboration with partners like PSA is key in our journey to make Jurong Island a sustainable Energy and Chemicals park.”
