Port of Oakland witnesses March container volume growth

The Port of Oakland’s March container traffic continues to signal cargo growth, with 202,816 TEU passing through port facilities, a 19.1 per cent increase over March 2023 volume.

Full imports at the Oakland Seaport increased for the sixth consecutive month, by 38.4 per cent compared to March 2023.

In March 2024, port operators handled 83,483 full incoming TEU, compared to 60,311 full import TEU in March 2023, marking their greatest throughput since August 2022.

According to the port, rising earnings and net worth among customers in major Northern California areas are credited with boosting imports.

Full exports increased for the fourth month in a running, by 14.8 per cent compared to March 2023, traversing 75,352 TEU in March 2024 vs 65,635 TEU in March 2023. This marks the highest monthly total for entire outgoing cargo at Oakland since April 2021.

Port of Oakland Maritime Director, Bryan Brandes, said: “I am encouraged that the positive cargo trends we are seeing in 2024 continue. A strong economy and the need for retailers to replenish stock in their warehouses are driving import cargo activity today.”

Empty imports increased by 11.9 per cent to 20,254 TEU in March 2024, compared to 18,097 TEU in March 2023. Empty exports fell 9.5 per cent, to 23,728 TEU in February 2024, compared to 26,225 TEU in March 2023.

In February, the Port of Oakland registered container volume growth, surpassing the 2023 volume for the same month last year.
