The Port of Oakland’s September container volumes have remained consistent with volumes throughout 2023.
Full TEU at the Port of Oakland increased by 1.2 per cent in September compared to September 2022, reaching 134,186 TEU versus 132,559 TEU in September 2022. However, they have stayed unchanged since August 2023.
Full exports, which increased 9.1 per cent to 59,757 TEU in September 2023 from 54,756 TEU in September 2022, have remained in the 55,000 to 65,000 TEU range throughout 2023.
Full imports fell 4.3 per cent in September 2023, with 74,428 TEU crossing the port, compared to 77,803 TEU in September 2022, but are up marginally from August 2023, when 72,481 TEU passed through port terminals.

Empty imports fell 22.8 per cent in September 2023, with port operators handling 11,208 TEU compared to 14,510 TEU in September 2022.
Empty exports fell by 29.8 per cent in September 2023, with 26,429 TEU moving through port facilities, down from 37,660 TEU in September 2022.
Global shipping volumes have decreased. Shipping costs have dropped to very low levels as a result, and ocean carriers have begun to change their timetables, cancelling several trans-Pacific vessel sailings. Vessel calls continue to rise in 2023, with 744 calls, up 17 per cent from 2022.
Port of Oakland Maritime Director, Bryan Brandes, said: “The Port of Oakland current container volume is consistent with the leveling off of global container traffic. Vessel calls to the Port have increased this year, pointing to a slow and steady recovery from the turmoil of the past couple of years.”
Three months later, the Port of Oakland announced that its hydrogen projects are in line to receive state funding of up to $1.2 billion.
