Port of Melbourne nears 300,000 TEUs

Port of Melbourne container throughput increases to 284,000 TEUs

The Port of Melbourne has released its September trade numbers, which show a year-on-year (YoY) rise in container throughput to 284,000 TEUs.

Full container import volumes (excluding Bass Strait) climbed in September 2024 compared to the previous year, while furniture, household appliances, and paperboard all fared better than last year.

Furthermore, full container export volumes (excluding the Bass Strait) rose from the previous year, with timber, hay, chaff and fodder, barley, and meats all exceeding last year’s totals.

The port reported that overall empty container traffic was down in September 2024 compared to the previous year.

The Port of Melbourne’s July figures also showed a significant YoY increase in container throughput to 282,000 TEU.
