The Halifax Port Authority (HPA) and project partners have been recognised at this year’s International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH) Sustainability Awards in the “digitalisation” category.
BlueNode Inc. (Everstream), PSA Global, Port Saint John, Canada’s Ocean Supercluster, and Sentient Hubs are project partners in Data Enhancement Framework 2 (DEF2).
This project creates an evaluation of CO2e intensity linked with activities by combining data from cargo handling and transport, operations, and other aspects in an accurate and interoperable system, displaying carbon levels per container and per metric tonne.

Captain Allan Gray, President and CEO of the Halifax Port Authority, said: “The Port of Halifax is striving to do things differently. This is how we will address the challenges we collectively face as port, transportation, and supply chain partners.
“Building infrastructure at the right time, using technology to unlock capacity, decarbonising the supply chain, these are all goals that our industry is working toward.
“If we are to reach these goals, we need to work collaboratively, and we need to find new ways to get there. Through the PIER, our living lab in the Port of Halifax, DEF2 is one such collaborative project.”
