OOCL unveils sixth green 24,000 TEU vessel

Orient Overseas Container Line Ltd. (OOCL) has named its sixth eco-friendly 24,188 TEU, the OOCL Gdynia.

The naming ceremony took place at Dalian COSCO KHI Ship Engineering Co., Ltd. (DACKS) shipyard.

Following its naming, OOCL will have received half of the 12 eco-friendly 24,000 TEU class series vessels ordered in 2020 by the company.

Takashi Yanai, the Corporate Officer, and the General Manager of Logistics Infrastructure Business Division of Sumitomo Corporation, attended the ceremony as the vessel sponsor.

OOCL Gdynia will serve the OOCL’s Asia-Europe LL3 loop line together with its sister vessels. The port rotation is:

Shanghai – Xiamen – Nansha – Hong Kong – Yantian – Cai Mep – Singapore – Piraeus – Hamburg – Rotterdam – Zeebrugge – Valencia – Piraeus – Abu Dhabi – Port Kelang – Shanghai

Teddy Fung, Director of Trades at OOCL, said at the ceremony: “Equipped with the latest technology and green features, this series of new vessels will gradually upgrade OOCL’s existing fleet.

“This not only can fulfil our customers and the public expectations of energy saving and carbon reduction, but also shows OOCL’s determination to stay at the forefront of industry development,” Fung added.

In August, OOCL announced a profit attributable to equity holders of $1.13 billion for the six-month period ended 30 June 2023, compared to a profit of $5.66 billion for the same period in 2022.

More recently, OOCL won the Best Shipping Line – Intra-Asia’s title at the 2023 Asian Freight, Logistics and Supply Chain (AFLAS) Awards’ ceremony.
