OCI Global (Euronext: OCI) has successfully bunkered the world’s first green methanol fueled container ship at the Port of Ulsan in South Korea.
The bunkering procedure marks the commencement of the ship’s inaugural trip from Ulsan to Copenhagen, with stops at Singapore, Egypt, and Rotterdam along the way.
The operation comes little over a week after the International Maritime Organization (IMO) published its new plan for the sector to achieve net zero emissions ‘by or around 2050’, which includes ‘indicative checkpoints’ towards that aim.
The cruise will serve as a catalyst for future green methanol bunkering, with the ship refuelling with OCI Hyfuels’ green methanol at important worldwide ports, establishing OCI as the world’s first commercial green methanol bunker operator.
Ulsan Port is the world’s fourth largest port for liquid cargo and home to several leading shipbuilders.

By showing the reliability, safety, and effectiveness of green methanol as the first low-carbon shipping fuel, this expedition ushers in a new, more sustainable age in shipping.
OCI Global credited its partners for the bunkering, which included the Ulsan Port Authority, Maersk, and our shipping and storage partner, Odfjell SE, as well as the Korean Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
In June 2023, OCI Global announced it is fuelling the first ever green methanol-powered containership in partnership with Maersk.
That same month, Maersk planned to convert an existing ship into a dual-fuel methanol-powered vessel, allowing it to sail on green methanol.
