Ports of Bilbao, St. Lawrence Seaway to improve commercial links

Representatives from the Port Authority of Bilbao and a delegation from the ports of the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway (USA) have signed a Memorandum of Collaboration (MoC) to improve and expand mutual cooperation.

This collaboration will reportedly entail looking at the expansion of commercial links between the two regions as well as sharing knowledge and expertise, particularly in areas like sustainability, connectivity, and innovation.

The agreement was signed by Andima Ormaetxe, Director of Operations, Commercial, Logistics, and Strategy at the Port Authority of Bilbao, and Adam Tindall-Schlicht, Administrator of the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation, representing the American delegation.

At the signing event, members from the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation included Rebecca Yackley, Director of the Office of Trade & Economic Development, Danielle Pierson, International Trade Specialist, and Peter Hirthe, Regional Representative of the Great Lakes.

The programme also included Maria Cartier, Market Development Manager of the Port of Milwaukee, and Samuel Hankinson, Port Development Coordinator of the Port of Monroe.

In the course of the meeting, the representatives of the port community of Bilbao learnt about the characteristics and potential of the Great Lakes and its ports for international trade, especially with the central and east coast of the United States.

In February, the Port Authority of Bilbao issued its 2023 annual report, which shows a traffic volume of 32.8 million tonnes – a 0.11 per cent increase over 2022.
