Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Group), one of Japan’s largest shipping companies, has contracted technology group Wärtsilä to supply the exhaust gas cleaning systems for two new 56,000 DWT Handymax bulk carriers.

The order marks the first time that vessels owned or chartered by NYK Group have had exhaust gas cleaning systems installed.

It's also Wärtsilä’s first supply order of this type of equipment from any Japanese company.

By fitting the Wärtsilä system, the ships will be compliant with the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) SOx regulations, which come into force in 2020.

Technical Paper: How to Navigate the Dry Bulk Market

The Wärtsilä equipment is scheduled for delivery to the yard in July 2018, with the first vessel due to be delivered to NYK in the fourth quarter of 2018 and the second in the first quarter of 2019.

Sigurd Jenssen, Director, Exhaust Gas Cleaning, Wärtsilä Marine Solutions, said: “We are pleased and proud to be the supplier of choice for these two new ships, especially as it gives us an inroad into the Japanese market for exhaust gas cleaning solutions.”

Wärtsilä was recently contracted to supply the engines, propellers, and fuel supply systems for four new tanker vessels.
