MSC establishes container terminal at Port of Aarhus

The Port of Aarhus has signed an agreement with Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) for the lease of land to develop a new container terminal.

Terminal Investment Limited (TiL), MSC Group’s container terminal operator, will move into the Omniterminal, which is currently being finalised.

The agreement between the Port of Aarhus and MSC Group means that TiL will lease approximately 170,000 square metres in the Omniterminal, where they will establish and operate their own container terminal.

The terminal is expected to be fully developed by 2027, at which time MSC Group and TiL will be able to start using the area. With this agreement, Denmark’s two largest container terminals will be located at the port in Aarhus.

“We are pleased that MSC Group and TiL see Port of Aarhus as an attractive port and are now choosing to invest in establishing a container terminal,” said Thomas Haber Borch, CEO of Port of Aarhus.

“This provides businesses with more opportunities to trade with the world, strengthens our competitiveness, and reinforces our role in ensuring Danish supply to the benefit of businesses and Denmark.”

“Port of Aarhus offers a good location for the future network plans we have made,” said CEO of MSC Søren Toft.

“We will be introducing a direct mainliner between Asia and Aarhus next year and, in combination with our own terminal, we can provide our customers with a practical logistics solution.

“In the longer term, we are looking at other routes that could have a positive impact on Danish business and we will consider further investment when new areas are developed at the port of Aarhus.”

Last month, MSC won the ‘Container Shipping Line of the Year: India – America, Africa & Europe Trade Lanes’.
