As we gear up for our first-ever Maritime Safety Series: Ports Edition, we’ve had the privilege of speaking with some of our speakers about the critical importance of safety in maritime operations and why attending this event could be an invaluable step towards steering the industry toward a safer future for all.
In this interview, we’re excited to share insights from Bill Brassington, Safety & Security Consultant at ETS Consulting.
Why is safety a critical focus in the maritime industry today?
Container ships are getting bigger, time to transport and time in port to load and unload is getting tighter, consequently, those employed to undertake the tasks are placed under increasing pressure. Ports experience periods of great activity followed by periods of inactivity placing systems under extreme stress. Seafarers are also placed under incredible mental and physical pressure especially as crew sizes diminish.
We continue to see fatalities and incidents that appear to reoccur repeatedly, the maritime industry continues to be classified as dangerous with greater risk to life than many other industries. We need this to change and until we recognise that safety is the most important part of operations, and commit to it at all levels, we will continue to see the same incidents happening again and again.
What inspired you to participate in the Maritime Safety Series event?
ICHCA International is a partner in this Series and as Chair of the International Technical Panel, I am beholden to support any activities that improve the lives of port workers and seafarers. Furthermore, I have been working on their safety for more than 20 years. Unfortunately, I see little change that embodies safety in the culture of managers and workers. This series allows me to address the situation and promote the need for change not in words but in actions.
What key message or insight do you hope to share with attendees?
Change is required, the maritime industry cannot continue to operate where shortcuts and poor practice are permitted and sometimes rewarded. Safety is not something to be hung on the wall, we need to improve the need for training and its presentation. All layers of management and workforce need to embrace a change in their culture and their thoughts towards safety and to call out, without fear, where there is a risk of an incident occurring.
Everyone has the right to go home at the end of their shift.
