Douglas Watson, Director Maritime Business Unit Director at Ericsson, is the latest industry expert to join the speaker line up at the Second Annual PTI Terminal Automation & Training C-Level Networking Conference, taking place in London on April 19-20, 2017.

In a career spanning three decades, Watson has gained invaluable insight into the communications industry with senior executive positions at Inmarsat and Motorola, as well as Ericsson. His involvement in numerous maritime research projects have been funded by government agencies, industry, research councils, the European Space Agency and the European Commission.

While Ericsson may be traditionally known for its telecoms business, its activities spread beyond this to many other areas of IT, with the organisation going as far as to create a specialised company offering maritime insight.

This grew out of a partnership with Maersk, in which Ericsson provided networking programmes for reefers and eventually led providing data on reefers, which in turn led to data on actual ships.

Expertise will be shared from a diverse range of collaborations and will provide attendees with an alternative perspective into the industry compared to other speaker sessions announced so far.

Watson intends to discuss the transformation of digital operations in ports and terminals, specifically focusing on how shippers and liners can upgrading services from HR to the frontline, automated terminals and seamless software, terminal operators diversifying solution providers, supplier homogeneity in operations and how the maritime industry can learn from the developments in other sectors and “cross-fertilise”.
