Kenya is establishing a National Maritime Information Sharing Centre (NMISC) to boost maritime security and inter-agency coordination.
From 28 – 31 July 2025, a Roadmap Formulation Workshop in Mombasa brought together 15 representatives from key government agencies.
The workshop aligned with the Djibouti Code of Conduct and Jeddah Amendment (DCoC/JA), a regional framework to counter piracy and other illicit maritime activities in the Western Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden.
The Kenya Maritime Authority led the discussions, supported by technical input from the IMO and representatives from the Government of India.

Participants assessed legal and operational frameworks, identified capacity gaps, and outlined steps for building a functional NMISC.
Once operational, the centre will act as a national hub to collect, analyse, and share maritime security data.

It will enable real-time monitoring and response to threats such as piracy, illegal fishing, trafficking, and marine pollution, while improving coordination across national and regional agencies.
The workshop forms part of the EU-funded Safe Seas for Africa (SSA) initiative, a €1 million ($1.17 million), 36-month project focused on supporting Kenya, Tanzania, and Mauritius in launching national maritime information centres.
