A global maritime logistics forum has been created to enhance collaboration in the maritime logistics chain by the International Transport Forum (ITF) — an intergovernmental organisation think tank for transport policy.

This is the outcome of intensive talks yesterday (May 31, 2017) during the Summit of the International Transport Forum in in Leipzig, Germany, between representatives of major stakeholders of the maritime logistics chain.

Participants included representatives from the Global Shippers Forum, the International Chamber of Shipping, the International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, PSA International, Port of Hamburg, GIL, Feport and the ITF.

The aim of the forum would be to enhance collaboration between stakeholders in order to improve the efficiency of the chain.

Dr. Young Tae Kim (pictured left) has also been chosen as the organisation’s new Secretary-General today by the transport ministers of ITF member countries at the annual summit.

ITF also celebrated its member country count reaching 59 today with the addition of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the United Arab Emirates.

Transport Ministers from member countries of the International Transport Forum have expressed their political will to improve the governance frameworks for transport in order to help achieve objectives agreed by the international community.

Olaf Merk, Administrator Ports and Shipping at the International Transport Forum, referred to the global maritime logistics forum as a “milestone”.

He added: “There was a wide consensus on the need for collaboration. This is truly the new efficiency frontier.”
