Basra Gateway Terminal (BGT), International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI)’s operation at the Port of Umm Qasr, has handled the HMM Daon—the largest container vessel to call at the port.
The arrival highlights how BGT can accommodate ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs), supported by ongoing infrastructure investments and the addition of three post-Panamax ship-to-shore (STS) cranes.
With modern facilities and a skilled workforce, BGT has become Iraq’s busiest and highest-performing multipurpose terminal under ICTSI’s management.
The terminal, with six berths and advanced technology, is the only one in Umm Qasr capable of handling 16,000-TEU vessels.
In May 2023, the terminal handled 4 million TEU after nine years of operation. The record volume was achieved during the recent unloading operation on the Yang Ming vessel YM MUTUALITY.
More recently, BGT received a new Konecranes Gottwald ESP.8 mobile harbour crane. This new acquisition is part of the terminal’s ongoing commitment to modernising Iraq’s busiest port and providing customers with dependable, sustainable service.
