COSCO SHIPPING’s 20,000 TEU vessels to call at La Spezia

COSCO SHIPPING has recently announced that its 20,000 TEU containerships will begin regular calls at the port of La Spezia.

The COSCO SHIPPING Aries is expected to dock at the port of La Spezia in the coming days, marking the arrival of the first 20,000 TEU containership from the Chinese liner.

The announcement confirms the inclusion of four units of these types of vessels in the rotation of the Asia Mediterranean Service (AEM1).

Each ship is approximately 400 metres long. This decision is in response to the need to adapt to a new normality, driven by the necessity to circumnavigate Africa, leading to the creation of two new independent loops in the Mediterranean, employing larger capacity containerships.

“We are proud and ready to welcome the COSCO SHIPPING Aries, the first in a series of ultra-large container vessels deployed in the AEM1 (MED1) service operated by the Chinese carrier within the Ocean Alliance,” commented Matteo Ferrando, Key Account Manager at Contship Italia.

“Our terminal has already demonstrated its ability to handle operationally this type of container ship, thus reaffirming our commitment to meeting every need and delivering the excellence in service that our customers expect.”

In February 2023, COSCO SHIPPING Lines opened its new branch office, SARL, in Casablanca, Morocco.

More recently, Iridium Communications, a leading provider of global voice and data satellite communications, announced that Cosco Shipping is installing Iridium Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) terminals on its vessels.
