Chinese Port and Huawei to Develop 5G Innovation Lab

China Merchants Port Group (CMPort) has announced an agreement with leading telecoms provider China Mobile and Huawei Technologies to establish a 5G innovation hub for the port industry.

A ceremony to mark the new partnership, held on June 24 at Haixing Wharf, was hosted by Zhang Yi, Chief Operating Officer and General Manager of CMPort, and welcomed delegates from both the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government and China Merchants Group.

With eleven participating units already signed on for the construction of the laboratory, CMPort will now provide the centre with further investment in order to explore the potential applications of 5G technology.

According to a statement, the laboratory aims to provide demonstrations to the port industry and help Shenzhen build a centre for innovation within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

 

 

CMPort has emphasized its long-standing commitment to driving a technological evolution within the maritime sector, noting its previous accolades of developing a “world-class level of wharf operation management”, an e-Port platform and remote-control rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs).

The 5G laboratory is said to represent the next stage of port innovation for a “new era”, enhancing the strategic competitiveness of CMPort as a port service provider.

In addition to this, the partnership is expected to aid the development of ports in countries that are participating in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

Following the ceremony, guests were able to observe a video demonstration of port remote field operation monitoring, UAV performance and the first pure 5G call in China under the 5G communication environment.
