The shipping industry faces a number of significant challenges as society increasingly demands improvements in environmental performance. The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) is engaged at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) on behalf of the global shipping industry on all three of the following environmental policy areas.

REDUCING CO2
IMO Member States will in June 2017 begin to develop a strategy to reduce CO2 emissions from the international shipping sector, in line with the ambitious spirit of the Paris Agreement on climate change. This historic agreement was adopted in 2015 by all 196 parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and entered into force in 2016.
