WinGD powers Trafigura’s Shift to ammonia-fuelled fleet
WinGD has announced that it will supply its X-DF-A ammonia-fuelled engine designs for four new medium gas carriers (MGCs).

The ammonia-fuelled MGCs were ordered by Trafigura and will be built by HD Hyundai Mipo.

Each 45,000 cubic metres (m³) vessel will be equipped with a six-cylinder 6X52DF-A engine featuring high-pressure selective catalytic reduction.

Benny Hilström, VP Market Development, WinGD, said: “Trafigura selected our technology based on our demonstration of X-DF-A’s development and strong performance indicators to date.

“With the first X-DF-A engine deliveries due in mid-2025, we will already have gathered significant construction and commissioning experience by the time these engines are delivered.”

WinGD has validated the key combustion and performance characteristics of the X-DF-A on a test engine, achieving full-load operation with just 5 per cent pilot fuel.

The engine matches diesel thermal efficiency while significantly reducing emissions—NOx and ammonia below 10 ppm and N₂O below 3 ppm.

Engine deliveries for the new MGCs are expected between early 2027 and early 2028.

In April, WinGD announced that it would integrate hybrid power and energy systems on four 113,600 deadweight-tonnage (DWT) wind-assisted tankers being built for Union Maritime Limited (UML).
