The Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA) has announced it handled a total of 313,430 TEU in October 2021, an increase of 5.6% compared to the same period in 2020 which only reached 296,892 TEU.
During the month, full imports grew 7.2%, while full exports decreased by 9.8%.
Year-to-date volumes saw an improvement of 14.7%, reaching 3,116,785 TEU, with full imports growing 20.7% and full exports declining 11.2%.
The NWSA has also recently voted to improve its environmental sustainability efforts by approving a $500,000 fund to support the use of electric yard trucks in the Port of Tacoma. Announced in August 2021, the trucks are to be bought by Rail Management Services with the NWSA installing the electrical infrastructure to support charging. The electric trucks will be the first of their kind in the NWSA gateway.
This directly links into the alliance’s newly updated Northwest Ports Clean Air Strategy, which aims to phase out emissions from seaport activities by 2050.
