16 rolling gates were installed on the Atlantic and Pacific sides of the canal earlier in 2015, with all 157 valves for controlling the water flow in the filling and emptying system already completed.
50 million cubic metres of dirt and rock were excavated from the entrance of the Culebra Cut to create a new navigation channel for the canal.
Once completed, the Panama Canal is expected to generate up to US$6 billion annually.
