UK Start-Up Launches Innovative Spreader Solution

BLOK Container Systems, a provider of cargo handling solutions, has announced the launch of the BLOK Spreader, a machine that could reduce operational costs for businesses in the maritime sector.

According to a statement from the company, which started two years ago in the UK, the new piece of equipment allows four empty containers to be lifted and transported as a single block.

By carrying more containers at one time than an ordinary spreader, the solution can be leveraged to ease congestion at container ports, boost efficiency, and decrease the level of emissions produced by cargo handling facilities.

Since its establishment in 2017, BLOK Container Systems has worked with the Coventry & Warwickshire LEP Growth Hub, as well as Coventry City Council, to aid the development of its innovative product.

As a result of their collaboration with the two organizations, BLOK was able to secure a £100,000 grant from the European Regional Development Fund.

Selwyn Rowley, Director of Sales and Marketing at BLOK, said: “This is a major innovation that is going to change the maritime sector – it is perhaps the biggest step forward since the introduction of the shipping container as multiple container handling has the potential to revolutionise port handling systems.

“Ports around the world handle 679 million containers annually of which around 24 per cent are handled empty.

“Container terminals charge at least £100 and often much more a lift, so the potential savings created by being able to move four at a time rather than one run into the billions.”

Jaymie Thakordas, Account Manager and Business Mentor with the Growth Hub, added: “The reputation and clarity of vision possessed by the BLOK Container System team is inspiring and we are excited to see just how big an impact their work can have on the maritime industry.”
