The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has unveiled the Fujairah-Mumbai Subsea Tunnel Project, an ultra-speed floating underwater tunnel designed to connect it to India, with the specific aim of improving trade across Asia.

According to a statement from the National Advisor Bureau, the UAE-India tunnel will also run by the six other countries in the Gulf Corporation Council (GCC) – Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait and Yemen.

Furthermore, it will also be a key part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) as it will link the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor in the Port of Gwadar with the UAE via Fujairah Port.

A recent Port Technology technical paper looked at the future of cargo transport, including automation and IoT

It will primarily be used to transport cargo but will also carry passengers across the Gulf to and from India.

A pipeline will also be built to transfer oil and gas, which could then be transported as far as China. What’s more, excess water from monsoon floods could also be transported from India to the UAE.

Trains are expected to travel as fast as 1,000km/h, which could see cargo being transported between Mumbai and Fujairah in as little as two hours.

The tunnel will consist of two curved concrete tubes submerged below the surface of the Arabian Sea. They will be stabilized by being attached to pontoons on the surface of the sea or by vertical tethers to the sea floor.

Speaking about the project Abdulla Alshehhi, Managing Director of the National Advisor Bureau, said: “The project (which is  currently at the concept stage) is meant to connect the UAE and the other GCC countries for the first time with India via a subsea tunnel and an ultra speed subsea railway line, with the aim of improving the bilateral trade between the two nations.”
