Two lives lost on Port Houston containership

Two ship crew members tragically lost their lives after a fire erupted on board the M/V Stride vessel at Port Houston.

According to Port Houston, the incident occurred during the early morning hours at the Barbours Cut Container Terminal.

The port revealed that the fire is now extinguished and does not pose any further threat to the local community. The Port Houston Fire Department noted that it will continue to monitor the vessel for the next 24 hours.

Medical examiners along with The Harris County Fire Marshall are conducting a thorough investigation to what caused the fire.

One more crew member was reportedly injured and transported to the hospital via a medical transport helicopter.

As of 9 January 2024, no further injuries have been reported.

In October 2023, Port Houston announced its biggest month ever for loaded exports, recording a 6 per cent increase compared to October 2022.

One month later, the port approved the port’s latest $745 million capital plan and $428 million operating budget to guide staff in operating and managing facilities and activities for Fiscal Year 2024.
