The Port of Algeciras has signed off 2022 by handling over 100 million tonnes for a seventh consecutive year, with 108 million tonnes of total throughput.

This total tonnage is an increase of 3 per cent from 2021.

Container throughput, however, dropped by 0.7 per cent from 2021 having almost touched 4.8 million TEU.

This was offset by the 7 per cent growth witnessed by import-export containers.

Straits traffic showed a 10 per cent growth in cargo exchanges with Morocco, which – on the ground – meant that 432,205 HGVs were handled on the Algeciras-Tanger Med line.

Rail cargo transport figures stand out from any other traffic type for last year: rail traffic grew by 60 per cent  in 2022, and has grown by 584 per cent since 2018.

This productive year for the Port of Algeciras was despite shipping giant, Maersk, replacing the port on its SAECS service with a call to the Port of Tangier on its northbound call last July.

Algeciras is the first Spanish port to be certified by AENOR, the Spanish Association for Standardization, for its sustainability policy.

Port of Algeciras’ Green Strategy has taken its carbon footprint down by 70 per cent from its level back in 2018.

In line with the terminal’s sustainability agenda, Total Terminal International (TTI) Algeciras signed a collaboration agreement with Spanish energy services company, ENERTIKA, to improve the energy efficiency of its facilities.

An On-Shore Power Supply (OPS) Project has also been approved for the Port of Algeciras.

This will supply electricity to berths at the passenger terminal in Algeciras.

This is an initiative that is financed by Next Generation EU funding under the EU’s RRF (Recovery & Resilience Facility) Plan.
