SmartPort is a pioneering venture that brings together the Port of Rotterdam Authority, Erasmus University and Delft University of Technology with business innovators TNO and Deltares.
Its aim is to stimulate and support scientific research as the Port of Rotterdam pursues its goal of becoming the world’s ‘Smartest Port’ by 2030.
It has initiated 70 projects since it was created in 2015, including collaborations with more than 100 companies in Rotterdam and around its Port.
The Port of Rotterdam is already Europe’s busiest port and industrial complex, and leads the industry in technological excellence and innovations.

This includes utilizing the internet of things (IoT) technologies and IBM cloud to create a digital replica of operations that will mirror all resources at the Port.
That means ship movements, infrastructure, weather and water data can be traced with 100% accuracy.
TNO, which specialises in sustainable industrial research, and Delares, an institute that innovates marine smart solutions an applications, joined SmartPort in March 2018.
According to SmartPorts, they’ll contribute to strengthening and expanding the necessary knowledge to make Rotterdam the ‘smartest port’ in the world.
SmartPort’s journey has five focus areas, which it calls ‘Roadmaps’. These are:
- Smart Logistics – this focuses specifically on the container market and logistic processes can be improved and strengthening collaborations within the supply chains through digitization, automation and exchanging data.
- Smart Energy and Industry – sustainability energy and optimal performance are the key goals of this Roadmap. SmartPort is developing several eco-friendly technologies, such as ‘Wind at Sea’.
- Future Proof Port Infrastructure – with this roadmap, the SmartPort wants to bring added value to the Port of Rotterdam by optimising transport models in shipping traffic and designing with positioning sensors and data analysis.
- World Port City – the objective of this roadmap is to provide SmartPort’s stakeholders with information that can influence future policy making. This is particularly true of the Rotterdam municipality.
- Port Strategy – the final Roadmap looks to bring all the others together and make the Port of Rotterdam the smartest and most sustainable port in Europe.
All this means the opening session of SPSCT18 [hyperlink] – ‘Smart Port Vision: The Rotterdam Story’ – is an unmissable one. Roy van den Berg, Project Developer at SmartPort, will give a presentation on the initiative and how it is pioneering the use of smart technologies, after which he will sit down to panel discussion with other top executives.
These include: Jan Gardeitchik, Senior Lead Digitization, Port of Rotterdam, Time de Knegt, Tresurer and Manager of Strategic Finance, Port of Rotterdam, and Rob Zuidwijk, Endowed Professor Ports in Global Networks.
