This Christmas, shipping containers will be used to deliver gifts all around the world, but could the acoustic quality of an empty container serve another purpose?

David Jeremiah Mullins, from Massachusetts, USA, has demonstrated an extra advantage of the container’s compact and echo-friendly design, delivering a moving rendition of Schubert’s ‘Ellens dritter Gesang’: better known as ‘Ave Maria’.

The composer’s 1825 masterpiece may originate from Sir Walter Scott’s epic poem ‘The Lady of the Lake’, yet the arena for Mullins’ performance is much more likely to travel across a larger body of water.
