PSA Sines awards concession for terminal expansion

PSA Sines has awarded the first phase of expansion of the Sines Container Terminal (Terminal XXI) to the bid comprising Mota-Engil, Engenharia E Construcao, SA/Etermar – Engeneharia E Constructao.

The terminal said in a statement that the expansion phase includes the construction of another 204 meters of quay in order to provide the terminal with a 1,150m long quay by the end of 2021, representing a private investment of 16.5 million euros.

This is the first expansion phase after the renegotiation process for the Terminal XXI concession, which, in its final configuration, will feature a 1,750m quay to be built by phases.

The Terminal XXI expansion project is the result of the amendment to the concession contract signed between the Ports of Sines and the Algarve Authority (APS) and PSA Sines and allows new investments to be made regarding the expansion of the quay and modernization of the terminal.

PSA Sines predicts an increase in the annual handling capacity at the terminal from 2.3 to 4.1 million TEU.

PSA Sines described Terminal XXI as an important transhipment hub that “represents an important port of entry and exit in the Iberian hinterland, being an integral part of the main international maritime routes where the largest container ships in operation in the world are located”.

Additionally, it said the investment reinforces the terminal’s capacity to receive several megacarrier ships simultaneously, thus increasing its operational offer while reinforcing its importance for the economic development of the region and the country.
