The Port of Barcelona has seen freight and container traffic both increase substantially from the previous year.

In a recent social media post, the Port announced that between January and August of 2021 freight traffic grew 17.5% compared to the same period in 2020, exceeding 44.4 million tonnes. Additionally, container traffic reached 2.4 million TEU, an increase of 31.1% compared to pre-pandemic levels.

In August 2021 it was reported that the Port of Barcelona’s container rail traffic had grown 46% in the first half of 2021, reaching 161,735 TEU. The container rail share hit an all-time high at the port at 16.1%.

This increase is a result of large distribution commitments, the increase in demand of refrigerated goods and the return to the activity of the Pla de Vilanoveta terminal by the hand of APM Terminals Spain Railway.
