The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) handled 7.8 million TEU in 2023, a 4.4 per cent rise from pre-pandemic 2019.
The seaport was the second-busiest in the country for loaded imports and exports, carrying 5.3 million loaded TEU throughout the year, and third busiest in overall TEU.
In December 2023, seaport volumes reportedly increased by 7.2 per cent over December 2019 levels.

The seaport handled 633,925 TEU, a 1.6 per cent reduction from November 2023, representing the typical seasonal decrease at the end of the year.
The Port Authority’s six vehicular crossings will have serviced 122.6 million eastbound vehicles through 2023. The figure increased by 1.6 per cent from 2022, reflecting robust volumes that reached pre-pandemic 2019 levels.
In December 2023, 10.3 million eastbound vehicles passed through the Port Authority’s crossings. The statistic maintained the crossings’ record of attaining daily throughput at levels seen the previous month and December 2019.
In January 2024, PANYNJ revealed that it collected more than $25 million from toll evaders in 2023, a 14 per cent increase from the previous year.
