NorthStandard partners with AI situational awareness platform

Maritime insurer, NorthStandard, and Orca AI have partnered to encourage members to adopt automated situational awareness solutions.

Orca AI’s situational awareness technology is intended to help vessels navigate safely in severe weather conditions and congested waterways.

According to NorthStandard, the expanded real-time situational awareness technology allows for faster and more informed operational decision-making, minimising the chance of accidents or delays to ensure safer journeys.

The partnership will feature the AI-based solution prominently in NorthStandard’s new Get SET! portfolio of innovative digital tools and practical risk-reduction solutions to protect members, workers, and assets.

NorthStandard will also incentivise members to use the Orca AI solution by subsidising their investments.

NorthStandard Global Head of Loss Prevention, Colin Gillespie, said: “Having seen how Orca AI supports the bridge team by improving their situational awareness we are confident that it reduces the number of close-quarters situations.

“By extension this must reduce the number of collisions, so it was an easy decision to partner with them to support NorthStandard members in enhancing the safety of their operations.”

NorthStandard anticipates considerable savings for members who use Orca AI’s sophisticated solution, with decreased bridge effort resulting in safer judgements and fewer human errors.

Over time, the analysis of the available data from the Orca AI system will enable shipowners and operators to discover safety gaps and patterns in their operations that demand attention.

Orca AI CEO and Co-founder, Yarden Gross, stated: “The widespread availability of advanced satellite connectivity has ushered in a new era of AI-driven technologies that connect ships to shore and opened up exciting possibilities for data-driven decision-making and enhanced operational transparency.”

Orca AI’s platform reportedly recognises and alerts high-risk maritime targets, allowing ships to avoid needless manoeuvres, reducing fuel consumption and emissions. AI aids the platform in optimising operations, lowering costs and minimising environmental effects.

According to a 2023 Orca AI study, 267 client vessels reported a 26 per cent increase in average minimum distance travelled, while the fleet as a whole witnessed a 33 per cent reduction in near contacts in open seas and a 40 per cent decline in crossing occurrences.

In December 2023, Johor Port Berhad established a partnership with Innovez One to accelerate digitalisation and improve the efficiency of marine services and port operations.
