Five electric & one hybrid straddle carrier for Antwerp terminal
Kalmar will supply five Kalmar electric straddle carriers for MSC Home Terminal in the Port of Antwerp, Belgium.
Furthermore, Kalmar, part of Cargotec, will deliver one of its new hybrid straddle carriers to the terminal on a rental basis.
The agreement, signed in August will see the new units delivered to Antwerp in February next year. The parties have agreed not to disclose the value of the order.
“By opting for the Kalmar hybrid straddle carrier, we wanted to choose latest technology to cut operating costs and reduce CO2 emissions at the terminal,” said MSC Home Terminals’ technical manager, Randy Verresen.
The hybrid straddle carrier represents Kalmar’s next generation technology, which was launched last week. According to Kalmar, the new hybrid system can deliver a 40 percent decrease in fuel consumption compared to existing machines on the market.
“We believe in Kalmar straddle technology and see the new hybrid machines as a great opportunity for the future,” added Verresen.
MSC Home Terminal, a 50/50 joint venture between PSA and TIL, is the largest container facility in Antwerp handles 4.6 million TEU annually, more than half of the total container throughput in the port of Antwerp. Earlier this year, Kalmar completed the heightening of six ship-to-shore cranes at the box facility.
