Sulphur Regulations Alliance

Norwegian carrier MPC Container Ships and Hamburg-based Ahrenkiel Steamship have joined the Trident Alliance, an international network of shipping companies partnering for effective enforcement of sulphur regulations.

The alliance‘s aims is to ensure the IMO’s upcoming sulphur regulations are enforced by the wider shipping industry.

0.50% global sulphur cap will come into force on January 1, 2020, bringing public benefits but also increases in operating costs.

The participants are committed to complying with the new IMO 2020 maritime sulphur regulations and support transparent enforcement of these pieces of regulation.

Constantin Baack, CEO of MPC Container Ships, said, “MPC Container Ships is pleased to be committed to complying with the new sulphur rules.

“Joining the Trident Alliance allows us to align our company with an important network of like-minded industry peers, and support industry-wide calls for effective and transparent enforcement around the world.

Michael Silies, CEO of Ahrenkiel Steamship, said., “We look forward to joining forces with our peers who share our commitment to effective, transparent enforcement of IMO 2020.

The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) has recently announced that its service of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) is being utilized by Danish authorities to monitor vessel emissions.

Operating in the area of the Great Belt, a route used by ships travelling to and from the Baltic Sea, RPAS measure the emission of sulphur to determine whether a particular vessel is compliant with EU rules on the sulphur content of fuels.
