MPA acknowledges Tuas Port investigation

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), along with the National Environment Agency (NEA) and JTC Corporation (JTC), has acknowledged that authorities are looking into claims of periodic oil slicks off Tuas port waters.

Initial investigations by agencies, as well as data from PSA laboratory testing on oil samples that were evaluated by MPA, suggested that the source was most likely further inland.

The NEA is reportedly conducting additional studies to identify potential upstream landward sources of oil contamination that may have flowed through drain networks to sea.

JTC has put oil booms and CCTV cameras along an exposed seaward stretch of critical drainage to monitor oil collected at the booms.

A night patrol has been deployed along Tuas South Ave 16 and Tuas South Way to increase monitoring in the region.

The NEA has also sent instructions and reminders to numerous sites around Tuas Port regarding proper waste oil management.

MPA is conducting frequent patrols to monitor the seas around Tuas Port, with oil spill response ships ready to be launched on short notice to deal with any oil slicks that may occur.

According to MPA, there is currently no indication of a single source of oil contamination. The oil slicks have had no substantial impact on port operations or navigation.

In January, MPA partnered with Pyxis Energy, Pyxis Maritime, SP Mobility, Seatrium O&G, and Yinson Electric to test vessel charging concepts in the region.

More recently, Associated British Ports (ABP) welcomed a delegation from MPA to the Port of Southampton for talks on sustainable marine transport under the UK-Singapore Green Economy Framework (UKSGEF).
