MOL Launches Big Data Analysis Innovation
Japanese container shipping line MOL has released ‘Fleet Viewer’, an advanced application designed to enhance the collection and analysis of big shipping data.
According to a statement, the application has been built to prevent communication problems faced by seafarers, particularly in retaining contact with shoreside personnel when the ship is faced with operational problems.
In practice, MOL says it helps maintain radio and telephone communication when a ship is out at sea and enables the carrier to offer safer transport services to customers by sharing the knowledge gained by analyzing accumulated big data throughout the fleet via the FOCUS Project.

To do so, the Fleet Viewer collects nearly 6,000 items of sensing data at one-minute intervals, which allows it to determine the status of vessels, the operational status of all equipment, vessel position, ocean and weather information and make this visible among vessels and shore-based personnel anywhere in the world.
Furthermore, it also features a user-friendly interface, which lets users instantly recognize the status of vessels, delve into data and send a push notification, but also customize the content of the system.
The announcement is the second step of MOL’s Big Data visibility following a previous launch in October 2018 and is part of the carrier’s drive towards improving shipping operations.
