Simon Everett, Strainstall’s Managing Director, has explained the market trends that have been developing as more solutions provide compliance with the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Verified Gross Mass (VGM) rules.

The new Port Technology interview offers further insight into the rules, established on July 1, 2016, which states that the verified gross mass of any packed container must be declared prior to stowage on board the vessel.

Everett said: “What we’re seeing is ports and terminals looking more at the retrofit of weighing systems on their port handling equipment to provide an efficient means of getting the VGM, because, of course, that’s the only solution that enables you to get a VGM without changing any of your existing port operations.”
